Sunday Nights at VOH

At Vision of Hope, Sunday afternoons are times of fun, relaxation, fellowship, and sometimes crafts!  We do a variety of different activities on these afternoons, including playing group games, reading missionary blog updates, participating in outdoor recreation, making hand-crafted thank-you notes and enjoying tea parties.  While I am not naturally very creative when it comes to artsy things, Pinterest can inspire even the least creative of us!  So when I saw all the cute scarves you can make out of old t-shirts, I knew this was something to share with the ladies of VOH.

Recently we spent a few Sunday afternoon hours upcycling used t-shirts that had been donated to Vision of Hope.  Most of these shirts were too big or too stained to be useful for our residents to wear, but they provided great material for handmade fashion scarves.  All I had to do was show the residents some of the Pinterest photos and their creative juices started flowing!  We tore, braided, looped, cut, knotted, wove, and stretched those t-shirts.  The artistic process was enjoyable, as was watching each other’s tastes and personality shine through as each created things out of t-shirts we had never before thought of making!  Everyone created one to two unique scarves that they plan to either wear or give away to a friend.  It was very pleasant to pass a Sunday afternoon creating scarves together.

I began my internship at Vision of Hope in July 2013. I grew up as a missionary kid in The Gambia, West Africa and graduated from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago last spring. I have a heart for women who are hurting, I desire to bring glory to God by helping them grieve and handle their suffering Biblically in a manner pleasing to the Lord. My life verse is Hebrews 12:1-2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” It is a joy and honor to serve and love the ladies of Vision of Hope.
