Sit And Stay For a While

In my time as a volunteer at the Community Center, one of my favorite phenomenons is seeing members and guests sit around for a while after their workout.  Instead of being in a rush to get to their next meeting or appointment, they pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee and just sit.  Some of them read a newspaper, some surf online, but some just sit and talk.  This is definitely something that separates the Community Center from a traditional work out center.

You can also tell that this was the intent for the Community Center when it was designed.  Instead of making the fitness center the focal point, Main Street, with the chairs, tables, and cafe are what you see first.  As you walk in, you are likely to be greeted by a group of seminary students discussing deep theological issues or two of our senior members talking about why the Colts can’t seem to win a game or a family with kids eyeing the container of cookies at the front desk.  Whichever group you happen to stumble upon, they are sure to welcome you into their conversation and make you feel at home.  So, next time you are at the Community Center, plan to stay just a little bit longer so you can pull up a chair and stay for a while.
