The Corruption of Man (Genesis 6-9)

Let’s just review where we are in the Epic: God’s Story of Humanity

1.         God is

            a.         Creator

            b.         Holy

            c.         Awesome

            d.         Sovereign

            e.         Does mighty Works

            f.          Worthy of Glory

2.         Man

            a.         Is Created in God’s Image

            b.         Fell in the Garden

            c.         Is by nature a sinner because of the imputed sin

            d.         Today we will talk about the corruption of Man

 Small Group Question:

1.         What do you think should be the natural behavior of the created being toward the Creator?

Let’s take a quick look at the condition of the earth just 3 chapters after man fell into sin.

I.          Man was defined by their Wickedness (Genesis 6:5-7, 11-13).

A.        The intention of the thoughts of man’s heart was only evil continually.

What does that look like?  Does our society fit this category?

(Romans 1:18-32)

B.        God determined to destroy the Creation He made and start again.

II.        A Crazy Plan for Noah’s Salvation (6:14-7:5)

A.        God gave Noah some pretty crazy steps to be able to be saved.

Why was the idea of building this ark a crazy idea?

B.        God provides a pretty crazy idea for your salvation.

What is the crazy plan for your salvation?

(1 Corinthians 1:18-25)

C.        Noah obeyed God and they were saved.

III.       The Destruction of the Corrupt (7:11-24)

A.        The promise was fulfilled and the flood came upon the earth.

How final was the punishment for those who rejected God’s plan for their salvation from the flood?

Likewise how final is the punishment who reject God’s gift of salvation?

(Luke 16:19-31)

B.        God remembered Noah and took care of Him as He promised. (8:1-19)

So far we have seen the story of Man in this Epic to go like this.  God the Holy, Awesome, Sovereign, Powerful, and Glorious Creator made man in His Image.  Man thought they know better than God and decided they desired the one thing that God was holding back from them.  With this initial selfish act of pride all man became by nature sinners, so much so that all of society is corrupt and deserving of society wide destruction.  The good news is that the story does not stop here; the bad news is that the majority of society does not realize the horrible state they are in.
